November marks the tail end of Bhutan's autumn peak season. While temperatures are dropping, particularly at night, this is still an excellent time to visit. Expect clear skies, beautiful views, and the chance to see migratory black-necked cranes. Here are some key things to know about traveling to Bhutan in November:
Weather
November is late autumn in Bhutan, a popular time due to pleasant temperatures and clear skies, though nights can be quite cold, particularly at higher altitudes. The altitude significantly affects temperature variations across Bhutan. While low-lying areas near India, like Gelephu, experience a warmer Indian climate with average highs of 81°F (27°C), the capital, Thimphu, situated at 7657 feet (2334 meters), has an average high of 64°F (18°C). Punakha, in a lower-altitude subtropical valley at 4074 feet (1242 meters), averages 73°F (23°C) in November.
If trekking in the mountains, be prepared for colder temperatures at higher elevations. In popular lower-altitude towns, a regular jacket should suffice.
Crowds & Costs
November is peak season in Bhutan but slightly less busy than October, especially later in the month. Tourist attractions will be bustling, but Bhutan’s mandatory daily visa fee helps regulate visitor numbers, keeping crowds manageable. To attend traditional festivals, book tours and flights well in advance, as the best accommodations fill up quickly, and flights are limited.
Where to Go
November’s mild-to-cool weather and minimal rain make most of Bhutan accessible. For warmer weather and jungle wildlife, visit the Royal Manas National Park in southern Bhutan. In late October and early November, black-necked cranes migrate to the Phobjikha Valley, staying until February. November is ideal for visiting the valley, observing the cranes, and attending the Black-Necked Crane Festival.
This is also a great time to explore more remote areas like Bumthang in Central Bhutan, known for its cultural and religious significance and fertile valleys.
What to Do
If you're ready for cold temperatures at higher altitudes, November is a good month for trekking in Bhutan. Clear skies offer stunning mountain views. While longer, more challenging treks like the Snowman Trek are best in October, many shorter treks are suitable for November.
A key event is the Black-Necked Crane Festival on November 11th in Phobjikha, celebrating the return of the cranes with children dressing as cranes and dancing.
