Best Winter Treks in Bhutan

Updated: Jul 3, 2024

Located in the southern part of the eastern Himalayas, Bhutan is renowned for its striking mountain landscapes, with peaks in the Greater Himalayas reaching up to 7,000 feet above sea level. The Bhutanese constitution mandates that 60% of the country's 38,000 square kilometers must remain under forest cover, and recent surveys indicate that Bhutan exceeds this requirement with a 71% forest cover.

Conservation is a key component of Bhutan's Gross National Happiness philosophy. As a result, 51% of the country is designated as protected areas, providing sanctuary for endangered species such as royal Bengal tigers, snow leopards, black-necked cranes, and elephants. These animals roam freely within Bhutan's 5 million-acre network of protected areas and nine biological corridors.

Bhutan's untouched tropical forests of coniferous trees and numerous alpine meadows, set against the backdrop of the spectacular Greater Himalayas and snowcapped peaks, offer some of the best trekking experiences in the Himalayas. Here are the top five trekking experiences in Bhutan.

Most Popular: Druk Path Trek

The Druk Path Trek takes you through dense alpine forests, beautiful pine trees, various rhododendron species, and stunning lakes. Throughout the trek, you will encounter incredible views of valleys, lakes, green Himalayan mountains, and snow-capped peaks, including Gangkar Phuensum and Mount Jhomolhari. Sunsets and sunrises from the mountain tops are particularly mesmerizing. Highlights of the trek include the Phadjoding Monastery and its stunning views. The Lonely Planet describes the Druk Path Trek as "One of the most scenic and popular treks in Bhutan, following a wilderness trail past several remote lakes. Although it is a short trek, it still goes to a high altitude, making it moderately strenuous."

Jumolhari Laya Gasa Trek

The Jumolhari Laya Gasa Trek offers spectacular views of sacred Mount Jhomolhari, Jichu Drake, and Gangchhenta (Great Tiger Mountain). This 13-day trek takes you through isolated high-altitude villages, with opportunities to spot unique wildlife like the Blue Sheep and Bhutan's national animal, the takin. The highlight of the trek is the Gasa hot springs, known for their medicinal properties and popular among Bhutanese for their healing benefits. The Laya Gasa Trek is considered one of Bhutan's most beautiful, enriching, and rewarding treks.

Snowman Trek

The Snowman Trek is known as the most difficult and toughest trek in the world, but also the most beautiful and rewarding. This physically demanding trek is only for the very active, healthy, and passionate trekkers. It traverses high altitudes, crossing more than thirteen high mountain passes and remote highland settlements. You will camp on snow, with spectacular views of Bhutan's great snow-capped mountains, serene turquoise lakes, and explore the isolated Lunana region. Lunana, in the northern highlands of Bhutan near the Tibetan border, is known as 'The Dark Inner Region' or 'The Black Sheep.' Legend has it that spirits of the seven Tibetan brothers who were defeated in battle reside in this region and are worshipped by the local people.

Dagala Thousand Lake Trek

Reaching an elevation of 4,100 meters above sea level, the Dagala Thousand Lake Trek is a challenging five-day trek in Bhutan. This trek offers views of numerous mountain lakes and the majestic Himalayan ranges. During the trekking season, from September to November and March to May, you can see some of the highest mountains in the Himalayas, including Mount Jumolhari, Mount Everest, and Mount Kanchenjunga. The trek features leisurely routes through rhododendron flowers, small but beautiful passes, and numerous turquoise lakes. The first camp is warm, set among tall broadleaf and chir-pine forests, while the second and third camps are harsh, windy, and cold but offer amazing sunrises and sunsets.

Jumolhari Yaktsa Trek

If you seek untouched natural beauty, the Jumolhari Yaktsa Trek, also known as the Mt. Jumolhari Combo Trek, is for you. This trek combines four popular routes: Jumolhari, Laya Gasa, Druk Path, and Naro Trek. You will venture as high as 5,000 meters, exploring the scenic Paro Valley and experiencing the diverse landscapes Bhutan offers, concluding your trek in Thimphu, the capital city.
